Attention to the senses!

The Iñurritza Route is a unique landscape for the enjoyment of all senses. As we listen to the songs of the birds, as we enjoy the saltpetre or immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the marsh of Iñurritza, touch, smell and taste allow us to discover the natural elements of this journey.

This exciting route, which runs through the shade, will allow us to identify, touch and smell different types of trees and bushes that are at the edge of the road. Do we have the senses prepared? Let's start!

TOUCH

If you touch the logs that you'll find on your right hand, you'll notice a kind of cork in your bark. You don't need to get too far to make the corks from the txakoli bottles! It's about cork oak. In Zarautz, we call this oak tree “arkamurka.”

TASTE

The Madroño, a shrub of green and shiny leaves that in autumn produces the fruit of the same name, is used to produce confectionery, alcoholic beverages and vinagres. Its taste is sweet, but be careful! Adult specimens contain alcohol and can cause headache and drunkenness! Her Latin name (Arbutus unedo) gives us a hint about it: “arbor” (shrub), “unus” (one) and “or” (eat), that is, eat only one if you don’t want anything to happen to you.

OLFACTION

Laurel is a dark green hardleaf plant that you'll find in the humid and gloomy places. It's easily identifiable by smell. You may be reminded of the smell of your grandmother's sauces or stews, because it's used a lot in the kitchen. But it's also introduced into the drawers, as an insect repellent. In the spring it has yellowish, greenish or whitish flowers, and the black fruits that leave it in the fall feed many birds. Let's see if you identify any specimens!

EAR

If you had to put music to this trajectory, surely the melody would be played by a bird orchestra. In our case, the following:

Mirlo

Petirrojo

Martin fisherman

Common redfish

Wild ducks

Great concert, right?
