We started our tour in the dune area. Did you know that Zarautz was built on a dune system? Dunes are mounds of sand that form when you accumulate the sand particles that the wind brings. Unfortunately, they are not very numerous ecosystems, but the duna of Zarautz is the largest of Gipuzkoa. Although they originally occupied larger spaces, human activities have completely changed their landscape. You just have to see these pictures 100 years ago!
Enjoy the landscape as you go through this wooden walkway and notice that it is built on some columns so that the wind does not lose its ability to transport the sand from one side to the other. Dunes are very dynamic ecosystems that vary in shape by wind, wave and sea storms.
